FAMILY – LIKE BRANCHES ON A TREE, WE ALL GROW IN DIFFERENT DIRETIONS BUT OUR ROOTS KEEP US ALL TOGETHER

Parenting is the most important job you will ever have. It is also the hardest job you will ever have.

Without a strong, supportive, secure root, a tree will never reach its full potential. Without a strong, supportive, secure family a child may never reach their full potential.

During parenting sessions, I often ask parents:

If you could use one or two words as to how you would like your child/children to ‘be’ in the world, what might they be?

If you had to give your child or children three pieces of advice for life, what would they be?

Imagine it is their 21st birthday and they are reflecting back on their upbringing and you as their parent(s). What would you like them to say?

These questions help them to think about what is important to them as a parent(s). When they fill in this questionnaire, it is very interesting to see how their values, traditions and beliefs may vary.

We all grow up in different family situations, with different values and beliefs. That is not to say some are right and some are wrong, but for your family to nurture and grown in a strong and secure way, it is imperative for parents to focus on what is important to ‘them’ as parents, regardless of what their upbringing held. To make decisions based on their own values and beliefs as adults and to decide on what way they want to parent their own children.

Take the time to discuss this within your family situation.

Is their any job out there that you are expected to do without any training?  No.

Yet, parenting, the most important job you will ever have is the one job you are supposed to know how to do, without any training whatsoever.

Take the time to get advice; do not be afraid to ask for help. Parenting is the one job that changes continuously, just when you feel you have a handle on it, the goalposts change again. A few pieces of advice can really help at any stage of parenting.
